Department of Excellence

The DMG is among the 180 Italian Departments of Excellence for the period 2018-2023.
The Department of Mathematics and Geosciences (DMG) of the University of Trieste has been included by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) in the list of the 180 Department of Excellence for the period 2018-2023. This achievement has required to obtain an excellent score in the national evaluation of the quality of research (Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca, VQR) in order to be enclosed in a list of 352 institutions selected among all the Italian public universities. After this step, the DMG submitted a Project of Excellence describing a development plan for Research, Teaching, Higher Education and Infrastructures that was evaluated and approved.
The Project of Excellence aims at expanding and strengthening the Mathematics, Informatics and Geoscience components of the DMG at by developing its skills and competences in modelling techniques that can benefit Earth Sciences. To this end, conspicuous resources will be invested, in collaboration with the SISSA, in the acquisition of hardware and software for High Performance Computing and computer graphics.
The Project of Excellence includes funding for PhD scholarships of the Doctorate School in Earth Science, Fluid-Dynamics and Mathematics – Interactions and Methods (ESFM) that has been recently credited by the ANVUR (national agency for the evaluation of the university system) as Innovative Interdisciplinary Doctorate School. The Project of Excellence also aims at further internationalizing the Master Degree in Mathematics that already has teaching collaboration with the SISSA and with the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The new Master Degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing will be potentiated and the collaboration with the SISSA and the University of Udine strengthened. International scientists will be invited to teach courses at the ESFM. Funding of scholarships for students of the Collegio Universitario Luciano Fonda is also planned.
To sustain the Project of Excellence the following positions will be opened: one assistant professor in Probability and Statistics (MAT/06), three tenure-track assistant professors in Informatics (INF/01), Mathematical Analysis (MAT/05), Numerical Analysis (Mat/08). A new technician in Informatics will be also hired in support for the entire duration of the prject.
